Caravan accident prevention scheme
23rd July 2008
Consumers who are thinking about purchasing touring caravan insurance may be interested to learn that police will be lending their support to a campaign that aims to prevent the number of caravan-related accidents.
The scheme - Operation Velopy - is being run by the Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) and the Highways Agency in conjunction with the Caravan Club and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VSOA).
Sergeant Dean Caswell, who helped organise the operation, explained why accidents with caravans sometimes occur on motorways.
He said: "Often drivers set up the towing outfit incorrectly, which makes the caravan unstable and increases the likelihood of a collision.
Illustrating the need for touring caravan insurance, Jenny Moten, regional operations manager for Highways Agency, said that there were 1,070 towing-related incidents on West Midlands' motorways last year.
Tourists caravanning in the Northern Territory of Australia have been warned to make sure they keep everything locked up after a thief stole from four caravans in Alice Springs in the space of a week.
