Caravan insurance would cover drivers as there is a 'real and largely hidden concern' about flat tyres

19th June 2008

As around two million caravan drivers take to the roads this summer they are in danger of forgetting to check that they are insured because their moveable motor homes "tend to be used only once or twice a year".

Tyre specialists Protyre has suggested that because caravans are only used occasionally drivers tend not to "carry out the basic safety checks" before setting off.

Driving with tyres that have not been used for extended periods of time can create "ozone cracking and general deterioration" which could affect "caravan safety".

Caravan insurance would provide drivers with cover.

Barry Norris, technical information officer at the Camping and Caravanning Club, said: "Tyres are a major factor in caravan safety and the Club encourages caravaners to check their tyres regularly and not to forget that age deterioration can be a real problem."

According to Protyre, caravan drivers need to make sure that their tyre tread depth is "above the legal minimum of 1.6mm and pressures are correct".

Protyre also suggest that owners of older trailer caravans should replace their tyres.
