Caravan sales increase as the credit crunch affects budgets

11th July 2008

The credit crunch is having a positive impact on one sector, as financial constraints on consumers are pushing up the popularity of camping holidays.

According to finance site thisismoney.co.uk, sales of camping equipment have surged by up to 40 per cent over the last 12 months.

Haven Holidays, one of Britain's biggest caravan break companies, has reported a 30 per cent rise in bookings and the National Caravan Council (NCC) recorded a 20 per cent increase in July and August.

The NCC also said that they had seen more people purchasing caravans, which highlights the need for touring caravan insurance.

A spokesman for the NCC said that camping gave people "a sense of adventure and reminded them of childhood holidays".

Ian Peet, from holiday specialist Go Camping UK, explained the financial benefits of camping. He said: "Everyone is tightening their budgets so it appears there is no better time to get back to nature and discover the joys of camping."
