Fifty thousand caravans to go through Dover this summer
19th August 2008
Over 50,000 caravans are due to travel through the port of Dover during the summer holidays this year, according to the Shipping Times.
With increasingly tight budgets for summer holidays this year, it's no surprise that many families are instead opting for a trip abroad in a touring caravan.
Keith Southey of the port of Dover told the Shipping Times: "At a time of increasing pressures on family budgets due to the credit crunch, a caravan holiday by ferry becomes a very attractive option."
The port of Dover has also advised holiday makers to make sure they know the height of their caravan to help operators load it on the ferry and to remember to apply the brakes once the cross-channel is underway.
It is also recommended that vacationers ensure they have the adequate touring caravan insurance when travelling in other countries.
If all the caravans that went through the port of Dover every year were lined up, they would stretch to an incredible 340 miles.
