NCC reports advanced security measures have helped to cut caravan thefts

2nd September 2008

An increase in advanced security measures has helped to cut the number of caravan thefts in half, according to the National Caravan Council (NCC).

The group has said that their statistics should encourage people to fit immobilisers not least because this could help cut the cost of touring caravan insurance.

Some immobilisers are automatically fitted to top-of-the-range vehicles, so those who have purchased them may be able to take advantage of cheaper touring caravan insurance.

All those caravans that have been manufactured since 1992 by NCC are recorded on the Caravan Registration and Identification Scheme (Cris) by a unique Vehicle Identification Number.

Louise Wood, director of communications for the NCC, said: "Some insurance companies offer discounts when these security products are fitted. Also, some insurance companies specifically ask for Cris registration from those seeking a quotation."

Approximately 1,600 caravans are stolen every year in the UK, but that number has decreased since 2000 following the introduction of various security measures.
